Two Men and a Truck - How to make a senior's move easier

Seniors are the fastest growing demographic in Canada today and will remain so for many years to come. Change can be a challenge for any age group and this is particularly true for seniors. Moving to a new place of residence represents a huge change for seniors and family members assisting with the move need to be aware of this. The baby boomer generation, born 1946 ? 1969, are typically the family members helping and they need to be aware there is much more involved than packing a few boxes and loading them on a truck.

Often the move is associated with an upsetting life event such as loss of a partner, illness, disability or inability to manage a house. Sometimes family members have had to convince the senior that moving is a necessity and this can lead to sadness or even resentment. Leaving their home and all the memories behind and going to a new residence, be it a retirement home, condominium or a smaller house can be absolutely terrifying. Boxes still need to be packed and moved, but helping a senior over the psychological challenges can be much more difficult.

Being organized and having a plan is paramount. Decisions have to be made regarding what belongings are going to the new place and what is going to happen with the rest. A floor plan is a good place to start as it will clearly show where things are going and what will fit. Allow lots of time before the move for the senior to identify all of her precious belongings, heirlooms and keepsakes, decide where they are going and then make the necessary arrangements. All decisions should be made before moving day so that the actual move can go smoothly without any surprises or last minute upsets. The day should end with the senior comfortably settled in his new place, a plan for how any problems will be resolved and some company for the first evening.

Calmness, thoughtfulness, patience, organization and understanding are the ingredients for a successful senior?s move.
