Everybody's home plumbing has quirks. Maybe you have to hold the toilet flusher down for a few seconds before it works or maybe you have to flush twice because your toilet just does not do the job of getting rid of the solid wastes like it is supposed to. Maybe you have to baby your dishwasher by not filling it to full. Maybe you can't put anything down your garbage disposal because it just clogs up. Maybe no one is allowed to use the shower in your master bath because water leaks into the room below, or maybe your water heater barely makes enough water for one short shower before it runs out completely and you're standing shivering in a freezing downpour.

So many times homeowners just accept that this is how their house is and they just learn to live with the quirks, not even thinking about it unless they have to tell a guest that they can't use the shower or that they have to hurry to get showered before someone else hops in and takes all the available hot water. Then they might be embarrassed at the problem, but still do not do anything about it.

A plumber in Glasgow can address these various problems and make your home plumbing less quirky and more wonderful. They can clean out clogged drains that keep your toilet from flushing properly or cause your sinks to back up. They can replace plumbing fixtures such as an old leaky sink or that malfunctioning disposal. They can clean out or inspect your hot water heater and tell you whether you need a new one or whether yours just needs to be drained like it should be every year. They can also replace leaky pipes and drains, improve water pressure if necessary, and replace valves that are hard or impossible to turn.

A plumber in Glasgow can make your house more efficient when it comes to using water by fixing leaky faucets that do not seem to be wasting much water, but in actuality are sending multiple gallons a week down the drain for absolutely no purpose. They can also fix leaky toilets, help improve toilet flushing power so you do not have to flush twice or more, and replace an old dishwasher that uses more water than a modern one would.

Green (Living) Review: Anglian Home Improvements announces ...

Following the award-winning success of their collaboration at last year?s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, Anglian Home Improvements has announced that it is again teaming up with TV garden expert David Domoney for this year?s gardening show.

The window, door and conservatory specialist is sponsoring the magazine-style Grapevine Theatre, hosted by Domoney offering a fun and interactive destination for garden-loving visitors to the event. At the centre of the show, the Grapevine Theatre will offer an opportunity to relax and be entertained, picking up some great gardening tips whilst keeping an eye on everything else that?s going on around the show.
Green-fingered celebrity guests John Craven, Bill Oddie, Adam Henson and Toby Buckland will join Domoney in the Grapevine Theatre marquee to chat about their love of gardening and much more. Roving reporters will capture all the action from the show, beaming it back to the screen at the Grapevine Theatre marquee where top garden design experts will be on hand every day to provide ideas on gardening and outside living.
Melanie McDonald, Head of Marketing and Communications at Anglian Home Improvements, explains the reasons for the company?s continuing involvement with the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

?Gardening is a favourite hobby of many of Anglian Home Improvements? customers. It makes perfect sense that homeowners who invest in maintaining their property with good quality home improvements will also take a keen interest in the look of the outside space and garden.?

?For many years, Anglian Home Improvements has supported horticulture shows by sponsoring a garden design or exhibiting products like our conservatories that ?bring the outside in?.

Following last year?s success of working with David Domoney on the Naked Garden, we are delighted to continue our association and feel that the Grapevine Theatre gives us an excellent platform to showcase our products in the dedicated display areas, tying in with some of David?s top gardening tips such as landscaping around conservatories, the best plants to grow in conservatories and creating kerb appeal at the front of your home with window boxes and hanging baskets.?

Anglian Home Improvements and David Domoney won a silver award at last year?s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show for their Naked Garden, featuring plants from around the world that can grow without soil to produce flowers, foliage, fruit and vegetables. Inspired by Anglian glazing technology, which is hidden in the natural transparency of glass so ?invisible? to the homeowner?s eye, the garden exposed plants in a series of cleverly constructed glass containers and transparent materials to show the beauty of ?naked? plants and expose what is conventionally left undiscovered.

For a chance to win tickets to the event, contact Anglian Home Improvements via Twitter, Google+, Pinterest or Facebook using the hashtag #HCGrapevine, explaining why you would like to attend the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The competition closes at 6 pm on Thursday 28 June and winners will be notified by 6 pm on Friday 29 June. Competition terms and conditions can be found on the Anglian Home Improvements website, http://www.anglianhome.co.uk/hampton-court-flower-show.

Following an Exclusive Preview Evening on Monday 2 July with fireworks and live music in the Grapevine Theatre, the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show officially opens on Tuesday 3 July and runs until Sunday 8 July. Rangers Vs. Padres Final: Texas Wins 2-1

With injuries ravaging the Texas Rangers pitching staff, Matt Harrison continued his strong stretch of games recently, throwing six innings and giving up only 1 earned run in a 2-1 victory.

The 27-year old left-hander has racked up a win in five of his last six starts. He moved his record on the season to 9-3 with a very respectable 3.41 ERA.

The Texas offense, meanwhile, continued struggle on Monday. The free-swinging Rangers racked up 10 strikeouts against San Diego starter Jason Marquis, as they were shut down after scoring two runs in the first inning.

The only Texas batter to get anything going against Marquis was LF David Murphy, who drove in Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre with a two-run double in the first.

Josh Hamilton was a defensive replacement in the ninth inning, and Ron Washington said the Rangers MVP candidate would return to the starting line-up on Tuesday after a brief stint in the hospital for dehydration.

Sydney Levin: 'Real Housewives Of New Jersey' Recap: When Friends Divorce

In fair Franklin Lakes, where we lay our scene, Teresa discovers a large, overweight creature in her backyard. Oh wait, just kidding! It's Juicy Joe doing some construction work in a "Housewife" beater and shorts. It looks like a junkyard, complete with some random scary dogs barking behind a chain-link fence. They seem very hungry for evil children, and it's quite the buffet at the Giudice's. While Joe explains everything he's building (a car port and a garage for his tools), Satan's tiny mistresses play precariously close to large holes. There's so much potential for something bad to happen, but alas, they live to torment another day.

Teresa explains that she's not terrified of being poor. "In bankruptcy, you are able to start your life again -- and that's exactly what I'm doing. Just because you do bankruptcy doesn't mean you have to crawl and die in a hole." It's a common misconception in this country that people who declare bankruptcy then go out back to inter themselves, vampire style. That's actually what "True Blood" was originally about, but then the writers realized the story needed a little less liquidation and a little more libido.

Meanwhile, Joe Gorga is pretty busy with some demolition of his own at a similarly craptastic site. Architect John informs him that he's also working with Joe's sister Teresa. He's helping with a car port that looks just like Joe's! Better get Teresa a flea bath 'cause she's the copy cat now. "I'm also building a garage. I think they're putting your parents in there," Architect John says with a nervous laugh. Joe's been his parents' land lord for the past 10 years, but he's been looking for a new place for them with no steps. This certainly wasn't what he envisioned, though he does admit that Grandma and Grandpa Gorga are at the Giudice's an awful lot. "They're practically like nannies," Joe scoffs. Yes, just like nannies who are also really old and have to go live out back at the end of the day, like some farm dogs that you eventually shoot and replace.

Speaking of a delicious meal, we then head over to lunch with Caroline and Lauren who is, shocker of shockers, talking about her weight! Before we go any further, I'd just like to note that Lauren recently admitted she did lap band surgery on September 21, 2011. Since my personal goal weight is "emaciated," I have no problem with that decision: But I do think it's amusing/ironic that she went out of her way to disparage her dad for taking the "easy way out" only to follow right in his thin footsteps. Anyway, Lauren orders a fruit cup and Caroline looks at her like she just asked the waitress to apply 20 extra pounds directly to her ass.

As you recall, she's not supposed to be chewing anything (other than the fat, haha!) on this Perricone diet. "Is it worth it to drink liquid egg whites every single day to lose a pound a week? I think I'd rather just enjoy my life and eat healthy," she says. In an off-camera interview, Caroline says she realizes Lauren is a "food addict," but she's afraid to tell her. So, obviously, she decides to share this secret with every single person tuning in. Over a few slices of sad-looking cantaloupe, Lauren says she's tired of being the only Manzo who isn't a success story. Off camera, her dad chimes in: "When you're like us -- and I'll speak for all fat people -- there's a demon saying 'eat that pasta.' And the demon always wins. So the bottom line is Lauren, until you start getting the self-control to not eat, you're just bullshitting yourself. And when all else fails, daddy will get you the lap band."

Nothing like the support of the family who knows you definitely won't succeed, eh? Sometimes the ties that bind ... are in your stomach.

Speaking of bullshit artists, it's time to see what Jacqueline's daughter, Ashlee Formerly Known as Ashley, is up to. She's living with her dad in Texas after a less-than-stellar stint in Vegas with her aunt and uncle. Her dad reports (via video chat) that she's "up all night and sleeping all day." Since Jacqueline can see where the convo is going, she makes a big show of grabbing some Bailey's to add to her cawfee. Dad explains that Ashlee/Ashley was being so bad that he finally told her to get the eff out. "Let her pay her way and take her ass to California," he says. As Jacqueline pounds her mother's helper, her husband expresses his concern. Her pain is palpable, and her daughter is failing all across the US. In the movie version of this story, this demented road trip ends in Ashlee/Ashley becoming a stripper. She's already got the name and daddy issues for it, ya know?

Over in Hoboken, Lauren and fab friend Greg are lounging at Greg, Chris and Albie's apartment. It's a gross, rainy day and there's nothing to do but eat. They bring in an incredibly cheesy, mouth-water and thigh-fattening pizza for the boys and a salad for Lauren. It's got some meat on it, but it's still like hauling an alcoholic to a bar and being all "here, enjoy this water. We've added a slice of lemon to spice things up." As everyone takes the carbs directly to their face, Lauren explains that she's going off her diet. The boys laugh and unhinge their jaws before stuffing sub sandwiches in. Lauren reminds herself that "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels," because it's not an eating disorder if it comes with a cute little saying. (But seriously ladies, it's true. Every time I put on a size 0 dress, the number on that tag is more delicious than creme brulee.)

Back at the home of a future exotic dance mom, Jacqueline is sending herself into an even deeper funk by reading the latest Teresa tabloid. This one says that "Bankruptcy trustees allege that Teresa knowingly withheld assets, including a $250,000 advance for her 'Skinny Italian' cookbook." In laymen's terms, Teresa and Joe are both in danger of going to jail.

Next, we flash to Teresa and Joe visiting their lawyer's office. But in an unfortunate twist, their attorney is arrested by the fashion police for wearing a stripped shirt and a polka-dotted tie. Just kidding. Their pattern practitioner uses a lot of big words that fly right over Juicy Joe's head, which isn't too hard considering he's about 5'3 on his best days. The lawyer that they probably got from one of those commercials basically explains that both Joe and Teresa have their own individual shit to shovel -- and Teresa's offer hasn't been accepted. "Everything takes long," Teresa mews. Then she goes into Oprah mode, explaining that God has put her through this for a reason, and though her bank may be broken, her will sure as hell isn't.

She also pulls an "every girl ever" card and uses one of the most popular phrases in the history of females: "Now I know who my true friends are." This is a thing you say after you've realized that you no longer have any friends. Teresa says Jacqueline is the only person she trusts, which is odd because she's not actually confiding in her. Jacqueline's getting her news from the tabloids because she knows Teresa often plants stories herself. Until now, we never knew just how involved Jacqueline and Chris were in the bankruptcy drama. Chris explains that when the Giudice's possessions went up for auction, he offered to buy everything and give it back to them. It's an incredible gesture that makes Teresa's secrecy all the more painful. If you've got friends willing to bail you out, you have to first let them in. Jacqueline lets a single, mascara-stained tear slowly slide down her Botox-smooth face. Dramatic Crying is her favorite sport.

What's going on at Melissa's house is less emotional, but equally upsetting: Melissa is hula hooping with wild abandon. She will do anything to remind us that she's got a rocking bod. I swear to God she would have gotten the Skip-It out if Kathy hadn't driven up. Kathy whips out the same "Teresa Facing Jail" tabloid and everyone does shocked eyes. Kathy admits that she hasn't really reached out to cousin Teresa in a long time and she's not proud of it. As she spills her guts, Melissa applies makeup 'cause girlfriend's skin is having a high school flashback. She checks her teeth in a compact and tries to put an end to the conversation, asking Kathy to just go and talk to Teresa instead of making her the topic of their conversation.

They discuss whether or not Teresa is feeding the tabloids or being victimized by them. The Giudice's keep up pretty incredible appearances, so it's hard for Kathy and Melissa to believe that behind the fancy new garage and gaudy decorations there's nothing but a mound of debt and lawyer's fees.

Back at Jacqueline's, Teresa has just arrived. She proclaims that Jacqueline's dress makes her look like she should "be in South Africa! Very Aztec-y. Very Missoni! I like your shoes, too." Now she's playing another favorite girl game called "I Know I'm in Trouble So I'll Compliment the Shit Out of You to Get You Lubed Up for What I Know Is Going to Be a Bad Talk." Fun game, but hard to fit the name on a box. Unfortch, sweet nothings don't do much to fix Jacqueline's mood. She's crying before they even start talking.

"I'm worried and I'm upset," Jacqueline says. "About whhaaaaa (hair flip)?" Teresa replies. Jacqueline explains that she's tired of reading magazines when she should be getting updates from the horse's mouth. (I originally was going to transcribe this part of the chat for you, but Jacqueline goes a little bonkers, talking a mile a minute about her feelings and her feelings' feelings and how she feels about all her feelings. It's the first time you can't hate on Teresa for not following.) Teresa says she has no plans to invest in a new stripped jumpsuit -- and if she did, Jacqueline, her "best friend," would know.

She denies selling articles and explains yet again that bankruptcy doesn't mean you can't totally redo your home and/or lay on a bed of money laughing like Uncle Scrooge in "Duck Tales." Jacqueline's husband Chris chimes in (off camera of course) that Teresa calls every day at 8 a.m. like "clockwork," but she never asks how Jacqueline is doing. Now those tears make sense. There's two levels to Jacqueline's pain: Sadness that her friend withholds things, and anger that it's a one-way relationship. Talking to Teresa is like talking to a wall that just wants to chat about itself.

As the sun begins to set, the argument is still blazing bright. Teresa's not moved by Jacqueline's concern in the least. "I don't know if Jacqueline's crazy, if Jacqueline's psycho. Some'in is up with Jacqueline," Teresa screeches. "She's like looking sad, another minute she's attacking me. She's like Hekyll and Jyde." Let's just take a moment to process that fact that she said "Hekyll and Jyde" before we move on. Go ahead and thank whomever you feel is responsible for making you more intelligent than Teresa. I'll wait.

Now that they're really dredging up everything, Jacqueline brings up the fact that Teresa tweeted at Danielle Staub. You remember her, the totally coocoobananas ex-"Housewife" who Ashlee/Ashley assaulted? That was a fun day. Jacqueline raises her voice and we get a peek at some of the tweets. It's juvenile and confusing and I no longer really follow. They're talking about awkward hugs and reunion shows and malicious lies about Teresa's nephew. Teresa starts to scream about holding a baby and they both do furious finger-in-the-air circles. Teresa says "malicious" like, five more times. Then she yells "WHAT? FREAKING JEALOUSY WHAT DO YOU THINK" and her eyes pop out of her head and have to be reinserted like a Chihuahua. I think they're talking about Melissa and Joe now.

Then, in true soap opera fashion, Caroline pops out of the shadows in a long black dress. "Why are you screaming?" she asks, as if it's normal to just appear in someone's backyard and question what they're doing. It's potentially the most scripted moment of the entire series, and it's hard not to picture Caroline sitting out front waiting for producers to give her the go-ahead to strike. Teresa tries to explain the fight she and Jacqueline are having and Caroline calmly drinks her mochachocafrap while flipping though the tabloid. She brings up the nasty things Teresa said in the last magazine and joins in on the wild finger pointing, too. Then they bring up the friggin' cookbook and the non-apology that ruined Caroline and Teresa's friendship. "You talked about my son," Caroline reminds her. "Why didn't you mention what you wrote!? You are lying to my face! You're crazy," Caroline shouts. Then Teresa lets out a blood-curdling scream and says "YOU KNOW I ADORE YOUR FAMILY," which is very easy to believe when it's being shouted in your face.

"It's so sad, I've known you 15 years and for you to turn on me ..." Teresa rants. She reminds us that Caroline "turned on her own sister," so turning on her friends is no great stretch. "It's not just the cookbook," Caroline reminds us. "For years she's been trying to poison my family member's minds against me." (It's just a shame she couldn't have poisoned Lauren's food a little, 'cause then the pounds would totally just sliiiiide right off.)

Caroline reminds us for the 100th time that she's totally over this, and tells Teresa that at this point, she can't be "more than cordial" with her. Teresa's confused because she doesn't know what "cordial" means. Jacqueline chimes in with, "For my health, I'm going to distance myself from you and your family." As awful as Teresa can be, it's not fun to watch her friends systematically dump her to her face. "I feel like I'm going through a friendship divorce," she says. "It's sad. I thought Jacqueline and I were definitely going to grow old together. It'll just never be the same." She stands up to leave and says, "No kisses? Are we kissing anymore?" Yes, Teresa, you should definitely give a nice smooch and a tight hug to both women who just told you they'd like you to exit their lives stage left. "There are evil people out there," Teresa reminds us, "and sometimes they come in the shape of your friends."

As Teresa gives Jacqueline what may be her last peck on the cheek, Caroline gets in a final zinger. "Nice bag," she scoffs at Teresa's Louis Vuitton. Relax, Caroline. Can't a gal go bankrupt in style?

We're finding out how salty the sea is

This week marks the one-year anniversary of a NASA mission designed to help answer an age-old question: How salty is the sea?

The Aquarius instrument aboard the Sat?lite de Aplicaciones Cient?ficas (SAC)-D is providing some of the first large-scale pictures of ocean salinity around the world, and how it changes from week to week ? which influences everything from ocean circulation to the global water cycle.

The satellite was launched on June 10, 2011. Over the last year, the instrument has sent back data showing the sometimes striking variations in salinity in the world's oceans and seas, and has also confirmed Earth-bound observations.

Oceanographers have long known that the Atlantic Ocean is saltier than the Pacific and Indian oceans, and the satellite images show the same. It has also shown that the world's longest rivers carry tremendous amounts of fresh water from land and spread plumes far into the sea. And in the tropics, extra rainfall makes equatorial waters somewhat fresher.

    1. Middle East UFO linked to Russian missile test

A swirling spiral of light seen in the skies over Israel, Syria and other Middle East countries on Thursday night has been linked to a Russian intercontinental ballistic missile test.

The satellite technically measures the "brightness temperature" of a tiny layer atop ocean waters ? a slice just 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) thick. Land masses tend to be "brighter" than water, so any measurements near the coast are skewed by their proximity to land. But as the mission progresses, NASA engineers should be able to sort out the signals in the data caused by bright land, and get the true measure of salinity in coastal areas.

An overarching question in climate research is to understand how changes in the Earth's water cycle ? which encompasses everything from rainfall to evaporation to river runoff and other factors ? is linked to ocean circulation and climate, Gary Lagerloef, the Aquarius principal investigator, said in a statement.

The instrument is the first designed to study ocean salinity from space. It takes 300,000 measurements per month, using three sensors, for a mission that is a joint U.S.-Argentina effort.?

Cruise hits London 'Rock of Ages' premiere

11/06/2012 - 08:41:15
Tom Cruise has insisted learning to sing for musical 'Rock of Ages' was just like working out for an action movie ? just using a different set of muscles.

The 'Mission: Impossible' star attended the premiere of the new film, directed by Hairspray?s Adam Shankman, in London?s Leicester Square last night, where fans flocked to meet him on the sparkling carpet shaped like a giant electric guitar.

Cruise said: ?I applied the principles of how I learn anything. I started with the vocal coach and he just taught me the same way that preparing for a stunt, I work with the stunt team.

?I?m just learning how to move air through the body, ?cause really that?s what singing is ? developing those muscles.

?So I learned technically how to sing and then I really had to find that rock voice.?

The 'Top Gun' star plays rock singer Stacee Jaxx in the film, based on the stage musical, alongside Russell Brand, Mary J Blige and Paul Giamatti, who also attended the premiere.

British comedian Brand lost his temper with revellers in the crowd who heckled him, shouting that he looked like ?Jesus? and ?a homeless person?.

Brand retorted: ?I?d like to play Jesus, and wasn?t he homeless for a while too??

The former drug addict admitted his role as a booze-swilling, hard-partying rocker in the film had reminded him of his past.

Brand said: ?When I was lying on the toilet floor I thought, ?Hello, here we are again... on my own?.?

He also revealed he gave his character a Brummie accent as a tribute to Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne.

The film, released in cinemas on Friday, also stars Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta as the lead couple, and Malin Akerman as Cruise?s love interest.

California high-speed rail director to earn $365,000

Jeffrey Morales, the California High-Speed Rail Authority's new executive director, will earn $365,000 a year when he starts the job June 18, according to a contract approved Friday by the authority's board in Sacramento.

That salary could be sliced 5 percent or so, however, if the state imposes executive pay cuts as a money-saving measure.

Morales, once a director of the California Department of Transportation, is a vice president with Parsons Brinckerhoff, the consulting company that manages the authority's statewide high-speed rail efforts. Parsons Brinckerhoff is being paid $199 million under a seven-year contract that expires in 2013.

Morales' hiring stirred critics who said his ties to the company prompt conflict-of-interest worries.

David Schonbrunn, president of the Transportation Solutions Defense and Education Fund, told the authority that it "is about to make one of Parsons Brinckerhoff's most loyal employees its paymaster."

The hiring "abandons any pretense that this is anything but a Parsons Brinckerhoff operation," he added. "What interest will someone vested in the Parsons Brinckerhoff retirement system have for the taxpayers when they are overseeing Parsons Brinckerhoff?"

"The conflict of interest is so blatant, this must not go forward," said Schonbrunn, whose group opposes the authority's planned route through Pacheco Pass.

Another critic, California Rail Foundation President Richard Tolmach, said picking Morales reinforced "a long tradition of inside dealing within the authority."

"An outside observer could be excused for thinking the CEO's job is to grease payments for Parsons Brinckerhoff," Tolmach said. "As capable as Mr. Morales is, this is just another negative reflection on the project of inside dealing."

The authority's chairman, Dan Richard, defended Morales' selection.

Conflict of interest disputed

"I understand that people can look at historical relationships," Richard said. "But the policies of the state of California will be carried out by this board. The board is responsible to the governor, the Legislature and the people. The executive director and his staff are responsible to this board."

The authority's chief counsel and interim chief, Thomas Fellenz, said he consulted with the state attorney general's office about Morales and his work with Parsons Brinckerhoff. "Based on their advice and my research, I've determined there is no conflict of interest," Fellenz said.

The authority proposes to build 520 miles of tracks between San Francisco and Los Angeles, via the San Joaquin Valley, for electric trains traveling up to 220 mph. Construction could start in the fall.

The compensation package approved by the authority's board includes a potential bonus of $25,000 for Morales at the end of his first year on the job if he satisfies a set of performance standards.

The authority's board voted May 29 to hire Morales to replace Roelof van Ark, who stepped down from the job in March.

Morales led Caltrans from 2000 to 2004. After leaving the agency, Morales was hired by Parsons Brinckerhoff as a senior vice president. As a Parsons Brinckerhoff employee, Morales has worked closely with the rail authority and was instrumental in developing the agency's newest business plan.

Tony Awards show not skimping on razzle-dazzle

(AP) ? It's time for the Tony Awards, and this year the producers apparently don't want to let you breathe.

Sunday's three-hour telecast from the Beacon Theater will be packed with so many stars and performances ? a record 16 numbers will feature moments from musicals, plays and revivals ? that cynics might call it kitchen sink programming.

"Every year we've added more and more entertainment," said Charlotte St. Martin, the executive director of The Broadway League, which jointly presents the Tonys with the American Theatre Wing. "You can feel the energy in the room when they're rehearsing."

The explosion of performances is an attempt to showcase as much on Broadway as possible and also an implicit admission that there's no clear, dying-to-see-it front-runner like last year's juggernaut, "The Book of Mormon."

In fact, the producers have even invited the cast of "The Book of Mormon" to perform again this year. And, to top it all off, one performance won't even be nearby ? the song from "Hairspray" will be performed from a cruise ship in the Caribbean Sea. It promises to be a hectic night.

"It's got that energy of any production," said Heather A. Hitchens, the executive director of the American Theatre Wing. "The excitement and the anxiety hand in hand ? that's what makes it work."

Last year's Tonys was seen by 6.9 million viewers, roughly the same number as the year before. But the program, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, posted a 9 percent year-to-year gain in the ratings for the 18-to-49 demographic. The popular Harris is back again this year and he'll be competing Sunday against the "Mad Men" season finale, but this time no NBA postseason games.

He'll also be tasked with trying to MC between performances from the four best musical nominees ? "Leap of Faith," ''Newsies," ''Nice Work If You Can Get It" and "Once."

The four musical revival nominees also get a turn on stage, with performances from "Evita," ''Follies," ''The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" and "Jesus Christ Superstar." There will even be time carved out for the cast of "Godspell" and "Ghost The Musical," two shows not up for best musical Tony.

As if that wasn't enough, look out for performances from the Tony-nominated plays "End of the Rainbow," ''One Man, Two Guvnors" and "Peter and the Starcatcher."

"With plays being such an important part of Broadway, we're excited that we're finding new ways to bring them to the world out there," said St. Martin. "The magic of a play is hard to show on a television screen. We're hoping this helps."

Not everyone can perform, although it may seem like it. One show not invited is "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," whose producers have tongue-in-cheek decided to hold a special matinee performance on Sunday and offer free tickets to anyone with the first name Tony, Anthony, Antoinette, Toni, Antonio or Antonia.

Producers of the telecast are counting on some intriguing matchups to keep interest high: Which play will win from a very strong category? Will James Corden from "One Man, Two Guvnors" take the best drama leading man award from the favorite, Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Death of a Salesman"? Who will emerge with the award in the best actress in a drama race ? Nina Arianda, Tracie Bennett, Stockard Channing, Linda Lavin or Cynthia Nixon?

"There's a horse race in virtually every category," said St. Martin. "I love that." Hitchens said such competitions show the diversity of Broadway's offerings: "All the plays and musicals are so different from each other and that's so wonderful to see."

Harris will have plenty of help on stage, from both veterans of Broadway and newcomers. The list of presenters includes Jessica Chastain, Nick Jonas, Amanda Seyfried, Jim Parsons, Paul Rudd, Ellen Barkin, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters, Candice Bergen, Christopher Plummer, James Marsden, Mandy Patinkin and Sheryl Crow.

The Tony Awards show is serious business and the exposure in front of millions is priceless. Many shows that are suffering pre-summer slumps are counting on a bump from the telecast.

"Godspell" producer Ken Davenport was warned that his production's future may hinge on making a splash at the ceremony. "'Godspell' has a heck of a lot riding on that Tony performance, as well as tourist traffic over the next couple of weeks," he wrote in a recent blog post. If Davenport doesn't see "a sizable uptick in sales," he says "Godspell" may close by the end of the month.

Overall, the health of Broadway is good, with shows yielded a new record $1.14 billion in grosses this season, and total attendance reaching 12.3 million. The only concern is that audience numbers were flat, meaning higher ticket prices are pushing the overall box office take.

This season, 40 new shows opened ? 14 new musicals, 23 new plays and three specials. Many of the musicals once again relied on Hollywood, with "Once," ''Ghost The Musical," ''On a Clear Day You Can See Forever," ''Newsies" and "Leap of Faith" all originating on celluloid.

Some older works ? "Follies" and "Death of a Salesman" ? reminded a new audience why they are classics. And George and Ira Gershwin ? or at least their estates ? are clear winners, with the revival of "Porgy and Bess" and the musical "Nice Work If You Can Get It" proving Gershwin songs still soar.

But, if anything, this was the season of brilliant original plays: "Clybourne Park" by Bruce Norris, "Other Desert Cities" by Jon Robin Baitz, "Peter and the Starcatcher" by Rick Elice and David Ives' "Venus in Fur." So loaded with talent was this category that plays such as David Henry Hwang's "Chinglish," Katori Hall's "The Mountaintop," Nicky Silver's "The Lyons," David Auburn's "The Columnist" and Theresa Rebeck's "Seminar" didn't even get nominations.

"It's a much healthier season," said Plummer. "There are some very excellent revivals and one or two very good new plays. I'm encouraged this year by the success of the theater. For such a long time it was just hanging in there. Now it's coming back. It always will come back because it's lasted 2,500 years."

What happens on Broadway got a boost this season from NBC's nightly soap opera "Smash," which takes a behind-the-stage look at two rival actresses competing for the title role in a musical about Marilyn Monroe. Packed with more stage stars than "Glee," the show made being in the ensemble look cool and putting on a show even cooler. A second season is in the works.

But if you're looking for another, more immediate rivalry than the one over who plays Marilyn, look no further than Sunday's best revival award, in which the two top contenders are "Follies" and a reworked "Porgy and Bess."

That contest got some added spice before "Porgy" even made it to Broadway when word came that the four-hour opera was to be condensed and the characters deepened. Purists including Stephen Sondheim complained that a musical treasure was being corrupted. Sondheim, of course, wrote the songs for "Follies."

Someone should make sure one camp isn't seated next to the other.

Wiertelaks donate $3 million to University of Memphis for education chair

Jim and Gina Wiertelak have donated $3 million to the University of Memphis to fund the Carolyn L. Wiertelak Chair of Teaching and Learning.

The University of Memphis?

The donation comes from Jim and Gina Wiertelak, and is named for Jim Wiertelak?s late mother, who was an elementary school teacher for 35 years. Wiertelak?s family ? including grandparents, sister, niece, and daughter ? have all been in the teaching profession.

Jim Wiertelak recently retired from his position as chief operating officer of Sedgwick Claims Management, while Gina Wiertelak (also retired), is president of the University of Memphis Fast Break Club, which supports the women?s basketball program. The Carolyn L. Wiertelak Chair will be established through the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences, and will recruit a scholar to further the school?s research in early childhood and elementary education.

?The impact of early childhood and elementary educators on children?s future success cannot be overstated,? Donald Wagner, dean of the College of Education, said in a statement. ?The building blocks for social emotional development are laid in preschool. The Carolyn L. Wiertelak Chair of Teaching and Learning will enhance the reputation of the college?s early childhood and elementary education programs, thus strengthening the University?s ability to attract other renowned educators and researchers.?

The chair is one of several endowed faculty positions the University of Memphis is establishing through its Empowering the Dream Centennial Campaign. The campaign has raised more than $205 million so far. It ends June 30, 2013.

Earlier this week, Brad and Dina Martin donated $100,000 to create a scholarship in honor of University of Memphis president Shirley Raines. That scholarship will target students training to be teachers.

California man pleads no contest to lesser charges in Maui murder case

A California man charged with murdering his girlfriend on Maui last year plead no contest to a reduced charge Thursday, according to the Maui County Prosecutor's Office.

Gerald Galaway, Jr. plead no contest to manslaughter and kidnapping in connection with the death of his girlfriend 35-year-old Celestial Cassman.

Each charge carries a maximum 20-year sentence.

Last September, Cassman's body was found after witnesses reported seeing her struggling with a man.

Autopsy results showed she died from asphyxiation.

Last year, Galaway had been hospitalized for injuries he suffered after jumping from a 100-foot cliff at the Nakalele Point area of West Maui, when he was allegedly trying to run away from police.
