Iran seeks help to rescue gas rig from seabed: Mehr

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has called for foreign help to recover a $40 million gas platform from the Gulf seabed, its Mehr news agency reported, in a rare request by an industry isolated by sanctions.

The South Pars project to develop Iran's part of the world's largest gas field has been hampered by a withdrawal of international energy companies, under pressure from U.S. and European governments, and difficulties in acquiring technology due to sanctions on trade.

The platform's huge metal support jacket plunged 80 meters below the surface after a crane broke during installation.

The structure, one of four planned for South Pars, weighs well over 1,000 tonnes, and the companies involved - state-run service company Sadra and a National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) subsidiary - have asked for foreign companies to help rescue it, Mehr said on Wednesday.

"Without the help of foreign companies ... it is forecast that it won't be possible to retrieve the jacket for several months," an unidentified NIOC official told Mehr.

An official with Pars Oil and Gas Company, Sepehr Sepehri, earlier told Mehr that crisis groups had been set up on the site and in Tehran and that steps to recover the giant structure could begin when the weather and sea conditions improved.

But the NIOC official told Mehr that calls for help had been sent out to several international companies that might have the specialized equipment needed, without having received any response by Wednesday afternoon.

Tight banking restrictions, which Western governments have imposed to pressure Tehran to stop its disputed nuclear program, have made it difficult for companies to get paid for supplying goods and services to Iran.

The sanctions-battered energy industry has pushed on without them. Most of the parts are now manufactured inside Iran, Iranian industry officials say, but the need to develop in-house equipment has slowed projects.

According to Pars Oil and Gas, the Iranian portion of the offshore gas field, which it shares with Qatar, is estimated to contain some 14 trillion cubic meters of gas.

For its part of the field, Qatar has become one of the world's richest countries thanks to the rapid development together with U.S. and European energy giants of complex liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities.

Meanwhile, Iran's international isolation has prevented it from completing any LNG export facilities and limited its potentially huge exports to modest exports by pipeline mainly to Turkey.

UPS 4Q results, 2013 outlook miss estimates

DALLAS (AP) ? United Parcel Service Inc. says weak global trade and a disappointing holiday-shopping season slowed it down in the fourth quarter.

Profit in the last three months of 2012 fell short of Wall Street expectations. So did UPS's outlook for this year as the company took a cautious approach toward the global economy.

UPS also forecast a "relatively flat" first quarter. Shares dropped 2 percent.

"Overall we still see 2013 as a slow-growth economy," Chairman and CEO D. Scott Davis said Thursday on a conference call with analysts.

Davis said Europe was more stable than a year ago, and "in the U.S., I think we got off to a strong start in January." But, he added, "We're not banking on a robust economy."

UPS is the world's biggest package-delivery company and something of an economic bellwether. It operates fleets of trucks and planes that haul everything from trinkets to industrial equipment between companies and from businesses to consumers.

The Atlanta-based company said it expects 2013 adjusted earnings of between $4.80 and $5.06 per share. That would be an increase of 6 percent to 12 percent over 2012, but less than the $5.13 per share that analysts expected. UPS said the first quarter would be fairly flat, hurt by one less business day than in 2012.

UPS said that it lost $1.75 billion in the fourth quarter because of a $3 billion charge for pension liabilities, compared with a profit of $725 million a year earlier. Without the pension-accounting charge, UPS said that it would have earned $2.05 billion, or $1.32 per share.

Analysts expected adjusted earnings of $1.38 per share, according to FactSet.

Revenue rose 3 percent to $14.57 billion, beating analysts' forecast of $14.48 billion.

The company said that disruptions from Hurricane Sandy lowered earnings by 5 cents per share and money spent on the failed pursuit of Dutch delivery firm TNT Express NV cost another penny per share.

UPS increased its plan for spending on buying back its own stock this year to $4 billion from $1.5 billion.

Peter Nesvold, an analyst for Jefferies & Co., said investors expected the company to make a "substantial" increase in share repurchasing after the TNT deal fell apart and freed up cash.

Standard & Poor's analyst Jim Corridore said the stock buybacks would help protect UPS shares from falling.

UPS said consumer spending on holiday shopping was less than expected, although it still carried a record 500 million packages, including nearly 28 million on the busiest day, Dec. 19.

In January, UPS walked away from an agreement to buy TNT. It would have expanded UPS' presence in Europe, but antitrust regulators there insisted on concessions that UPS considered too costly. Davis said Thursday that the company is still interested in acquisitions but probably nothing as big as TNT, which would have been UPS' largest purchase ever.

Shares fell $1.71, or 2.1 percent, to $79.52 in afternoon trading Thursday. That pushed the gain for the month of January back below 10 percent.

In Little Canada man's deputy videotape case, charges altered

Andrew Henderson's attorneys say they will seek to have charges dropped against their client. Henderson was charged after filming Ramsey County deputies making an arrest in the parking lot of his Little Canada apartment building. (Pioneer Press: John Doman)

The city of Little Canada has revised the charges against a man whose video camera was taken by a county sheriff's deputy, attorneys said after a hearing Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Ramsey County District Court in Maplewood.

Prosecutors dropped a charge of obstructing legal process against Andrew Joseph Henderson, who recorded an incident involving an injured man outside Henderson's apartment building.

In its place, they added a charge of interfering with or obstructing a member of an ambulance crew, a violation of state law that is rarely applied.

A charge of disorderly conduct was unchanged.

Henderson's attorney, John Lundquist, told Judge Salvador Rosas at the hearing that he would be filing a motion to dismiss the charges. A trial date was set for May 20.

Henderson, 28, was sitting on a bench outside his building's front door the night of Oct. 30 as a man with a bloodied face was patted down by deputies and loaded into an ambulance, he said. The bench is about 30 feet from the curb where the ambulance was parked.

In the revised complaint, prosecutors disputed portions of Henderson's account.

"(Henderson) videotaped the medical assessment from approximately three to five feet from (the victim) and (a paramedic)," the complaint said.

The injured man "became uncomfortable when he observed Henderson videotaping while he was being loaded into the ambulance and asked the paramedics to stop the individual from videotaping him," the complaint said.

One

paramedic asked Henderson to put the camera away, but he refused, the complaint said. The paramedic had to stop attending to the man so that he could walk over to Deputy Jacqueline Muellner, who was writing a report in her squad car, and ask for her assistance, according to the complaint.

"Henderson engaged in offensive conduct tending reasonably to arouse alarm, anger, or resentment in (the victim) when he intentionally videotaped the medical assessment, knowing or having reasonable grounds to know that it alarmed or disturbed (the man)," the complaint said.

Muellner approached Henderson and took the camera out of his hands. "If I end up on YouTube, I'm gonna be upset," she said.

Henderson said he was within his rights to record the incident.

He eventually got the camera back, with no recording on it. He believes it was erased.

The revised complaint adds details from the state about what prompted the deputies' presence at the apartment building that night.

According to the new charges:

Ramsey County dispatchers received a call the night of the incident from a Wisconsin woman. She could not reach her brother and was worried about him, she said. He was an alcoholic, had recently been in a car accident, was arrested for drunken driving and had quit his job.

The man was identified only by his initials in the complaint.

Deputies went to the Little Canada apartment building in the 200 block of East County Road B2 and knocked on the man's door.

He answered, saying he was "into his second liter of vodka," the complaint said.

"(He) was void of emotion and had a bruised face, which he said was from his traffic accident," the complaint said. He agreed to go to the hospital. Deputies called an ambulance.

Lundquist, Henderson's attorney, is a private defense attorney with Fredrikson & Byron in Minneapolis who is providing his services free of charge, along with co-counsel Kevin Riach of the firm and Teresa Nelson of the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota.

The defense contends that Henderson had a legal right to be present in a public area and to record the surroundings, including law enforcement.

The firm of Kelly & Lemmons is prosecuting Henderson on behalf of the city of Little Canada.

Expectations Are High For Air Freight Industry To Grow ...

By: Discount Freight

Air traffic rate results for November 2012 are out
Air cargo, one of the widespread means to carry shipments to different destinations, is by and large getting its due now. According to a recent traffic result, for the November month of the year 2012, released by The International Air Transport Association, the regulatory body in air cargo arena shows substantial improvement in the shipment demand.
The release illustrates growth of 4.6 percent from the same duration in 2011, and up by 2.9 percent from the October month of 2012. October 2012 had witnessed a decline of 2.6 percent in air freight traffic.
Although, Tony Tyler, Director General, IATA, said that its premature to calculate it as turning point in the air cargo industry but in many terms industry is regaining the lost ground, bit by bit.
Expectation for the year 2013 is higher as the prospect of economic recovery worldwide is anticipated. A boomeranging economy is certain to build confidence in export and import business periphery encouraging large freight transportation worldwide.
Worldwide, carriers from Asia-pacific and Middle-East were the largest contributors in the growth saga, near about half of the total air freight volumes were carried by airlines bound from Asia-pacific region. Albeit European airlines recorded less well traffic but managed to give flat traffic rate in the month of November, 2012.
For the global reach, air cargo plays a pivotal role
Letting you know that modern business establishments have widened its horizon and not sheer limited to respective territories but with the globalisation in place, trade boundaries are on the shrink giving large opportunities for global ventures. Personal belongings are also ferried to foreign lands
Beside professional matters, a large number of people also avail it as a means to send their personal goods and consignments to the foreign land. Almost all airlines have put a tab on carrying large volume of goods on the passenger flights, so there is an option left with passengers is to book their consignments on the cargo planes. This way, they can save off lots of money as well as curtail the necessity of carrying huge loads on the back.
For everyone, who are going to shift to foreign land or planning a trip to the exotic locations abroad or into export and import business, its a wise idea to ship their consignments through cargo planes. Extra advantages come in the form of air freight forwarding services, real time tracking of their consignments and more as such.
Freight forwarders help tackle lots of worries
Freight forwarding service includes preparation of documents, clearance from customs and delivery to the exact destinations. Its a well known fact that one has to go through several documentation procedures while sending their consignments to the foreign countries as the laws differ on territories. Passing through customs is also a worry where each and every aspect related with legality of your consignment is looked in deeply.
To save you from such worries, there are a few able hands in the air freight industry that pulverise every qualm of yours in sending goods to the foreign land. For shipments to and from Australia, you can find lots of such freight forwarding agents and companies online, reducing the worry to go from pillars to post in their search.

Slain US troops' kin get cash seized from Iran

Reuters, file

The ruins of the Khobar Towers military complex in Saudi Arabia after the June 1996 attack.

By Joseph Ax, Reuters

NEW YORK -- The families of 17 U.S. servicemen killed in a 1996 bombing in Saudi Arabia linked to Iran can collect damages from Iran-funded accounts at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel in Manhattan ordered the bank, which did not oppose the motion, to hand over more than $260,000 in various accounts linked to Tehran, still a far cry from the full amount to which the families are entitled.

In June 1996, a truck bomb destroyed the Khobar Towers, a housing complex in Saudi Arabia, killing 19 U.S. servicemen. The FBI would later conclude that Iran provided training and support for the attack.

The families won a default judgment in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. against the Iranian government in 2006 for more than $250 million, an amount that was later increased to $337 million. Iran refused to defend the lawsuit in court, claiming it had sovereign immunity.

Billions of dollars in default judgments have been issued against Iran over the years, but plaintiffs have had little luck in collecting the money.

The accounts at the Bank of Tokyo's New York branch had been frozen pursuant to U.S. presidential executive orders and directives issued by the Treasury Department as assets controlled by companies linked to Iran.

In court papers, the bank described itself as a "disinterested stakeholder" and did not fight the request.

The bank is a unit of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.

Best friends influence when teenagers have first drink

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Chances are the only thing you remember about your first swig of alcohol is how bad the stuff tasted. What you didn't know is the person who gave you that first drink and when you had it says a lot about your predisposition to imbibe later in life.

A national study by a University of Iowa-led team has found that adolescents who get their first drink from a friend are more likely to drink sooner in life, which past studies show makes them more prone to abusing alcohol when they get older. The finding is intended to help specialists predict when adolescents are likely to first consume alcohol, with the aim of heading off problem drinking at the pass.

"When you start drinking, even with kids who come from alcoholic families, they don't get their first drinks from their family," says Samuel Kuperman, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the UI. "They get their first drinks from their friends. They have to be able to get it. If they have friends who have alcohol, then it's easier for them to have that first drink."

The basis for the study, published this month in the journal Pediatrics, is compelling: One-third of eighth graders in the United States report they've tried alcohol, according to a 2011 study of 20,000 teenagers conducted by the University of Michigan and funded by the National Institutes of Health. By 10th grade, more than half say they've had a first drink, and that percentage shoots to 70 percent by their senior year.

"There's something driving kids to drink," explains Kuperman, corresponding author on the paper. "Maybe it's the coolness factor or some mystique about it. So, we're trying to educate kids about the risks associated with drinking and give them alternatives."

Kuperman and his team built their formula from two longstanding measures of adolescent drinking behavior -- the Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics and Alcoholism and the Achenbach Youth Self Report. From those measures of nearly two-dozen variables and a review of the literature, the UI-led team found five to be the most important predictors: two separate measures of disruptive behavior, a family history of alcohol dependence, a measure of poor social skills, and whether most best friends drink alcohol.

The researchers then looked at how the five variables worked in concert. Surprisingly, a best friend who drank and had access to alcohol was the most important predictor. In fact, adolescents whose best friend used alcohol were twice as likely to have a first drink, the researchers found. Moreover, if considered independently of the other variables, teenagers whose best friends drank are three times as likely to begin drinking themselves, the study found, underscoring the sway that friends have in adolescents' drinking behavior.

"Family history doesn't necessarily drive the age of first drink," notes Kuperman, who has studied teen drinking for more than a decade. "It's access. At that age (14 or 15), access trumps all. As they get older, then family history plays a larger role."

The current study drew from a pool of 820 adolescents at six sites across the country. The participants were 14 to 17 years old, with a median age of 15.5, nearly identical to the typical age of an adolescent's first drink found in previous studies. More than eight in 10 respondents came from what the researchers deemed high-risk families, but more than half of the teenagers had no alcohol-dependent parents. Tellingly, among those adolescents who reported having had drunk alcohol, nearly four in ten said their best friends also drank.

The result underscores previous findings that teenagers who have their first drink before 15 years of age are more likely to abuse alcohol or become dependent. It also supports the screening questions selected in the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the American Academy of Pediatrics initiative to identify and help youth at risk for alcohol use, the researchers write.

Kuperman, whose faculty appointment is in the Carver College of Medicine, says he hopes to use the study to delve into the genetics underpinning alcoholism, chiefly tracking adolescents who use alcohol and see whether they have genes that match up with their parents if they also are problem drinkers.

"We're trying to separate out those who experiment with alcohol to those who go on to problematic drinking," he says.

Biden: Virginia Tech Massacre Showed Background Checks Needed In Gun Control (VIDEO)

RICHMOND, Va. -- The 2007 Virginia Tech shooting illustrated the importance of strengthening background checks to ensure guns are not sold to people who cannot legally buy them, Vice President Joe Biden said Friday.

Biden spoke briefly to reporters after leading a two-hour roundtable discussion about what to do in the wake of the elementary school shooting last month in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 students and six adults dead. Also participating in the roundtable were Obama administration officials and a few people who served on a Virginia task force that made recommendations after the Tech shooting that left 32 dead ? the largest mass shooting in U.S. history.

"It's a national tragedy and a window into the vulnerability people feel about their safety and the safety of their children," Biden said of Newtown.

Much of the focus of the discussion, Biden said, was on improving mental health services and making sure records of those declared ineligible to own a gun are transmitted to the national databank for background checks. The group also discussed gun safety and trafficking, he said.

The meeting was held at Virginia Commonwealth University, less than two miles from a state Capitol where lawmakers in recent days have rejected the same gun control measures advocated by President Barack Obama: universal background checks and bans on combat-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, who was governor at the time of the Tech shooting, was among the participants in the closed-door meeting.

"We have the scar tissue of tragedy, but also reason to be hopeful," he said, pointing to changes Virginia made after the Tech massacre to become a national leader in reporting ineligible gun buyers to the background check database.

Biden did not discuss banning assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. Kaine told reporters later that he's open to the idea but wants to "make sure the definitions are right" in whatever legislation Congress considers.

He was more definitive in supporting universal background checks. The law already specifies who cannot own a gun, he said, and background checks are the only way to enforce the law.

"To be against background checks is to say you want people to have guns illegally," Kaine said.

Biden said the administration is planning similar roundtable discussions around the country.

Bangladeshi firefighters and volunteers work to douse a fire at a two-storied garment factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. The fire swept killed at least six female workers and injured another five, police and fire officials said. (AP) ? An official says Bangladesh's government has ordered an investigation into allegations that the sole emergency exit was locked at a garment factory where a weekend fire killed seven female workers.

The fire Saturday at the Smart Export Garment Ltd. factory occurred just two months after a blaze killed 112 workers in another factory near the capital, raising questions about safety in Bangladesh's garment industry, which exports clothes to leading Western retailers. The gates of that factory were locked.

Government official Jahangir Kabir Nanak says an investigation has been ordered into the cause of Saturday's fire and allegations that the emergency exit was locked.

Doctors say most of the victims died from asphyxiation.

Imagining a skeuomorphic-free, all-aluminium iOS 7

Imaging a skeuomorphic-free, all-aluminium iOS 7

Skeuomorphism -- the use of real world design in a digital context -- has been a target lately. At the extreme, it's held up as an example of iOS being boring, outdated, and bereft of innovation. In more reasonably terms, it's looked at as something that can be useful, but has perhaps been overused. I've gone on record as saying I think there are far more important things Apple needs to do in iOS 7 than wiping the world clean of skeuomorphism, both here on the site and in a podcast rant. But let's imagine for a moment it is on the agenda. That Apple's new head of all design, hardware and software, Jony Ive, was set to impose a new, unified, Aluminium theme. That, just like the Scarlet Witch in House of M, he whispered "No more Skeuomorphs."

Instead of arguing in the abstract about how much better or worse it would be, let's mock it up and see what could that look like...

A unified, aluminium iOS

Back before iOS 6 there were rumors of a complete, consistent re-skinning of the core interface into something more subdued and "silver". That didn't come to pass, though Apple's newest built-in app, Maps, did get a more subdued, more silver make-over, complete with new, floating buttons. Inspired by a discussion with Grant Paul for an upcoming episode of the Debug podcast,

I'm going to use something akin to that as a foundation, with a hint of the WWDC 2012 for the more heavily designed apps. I'm calling it "aluminium" in honor of how Jony Ive (properly) pronounces the word. Here's an example of Find my Friends, iBooks, and Game Center, stripped down and anodized.

Under the theory that consistency is usability, the more lightly-designed built-in apps could also adopt the same look and feel. Here's an example of Settings, Mail, and Safari.

Additional background

A lot has been written about skeuomorphism lately, by a lot of people far more experienced than me. Dave Wiskus, in an article for Macworld, explored the future of Apple design, saying:

Steve Jobs very purposefully built Apple to be a skate-to-where-the-puck-is-going company, and while skeuomorphic design has acted as a bridge between the physical world and digital abstractions, it?s becoming increasingly obvious that the world is comfortable with digital now. Technology is no longer witchcraft to be feared by the masses. We?ve grown accustomed to having phones, tablets, and computers around us to do things. With both visual and interaction design, we?re nearly past the point of real-world metaphors being useful, and the simplest representation is usually best.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball attributes much of this to the evolution from standard to HiDPI displays like Retina:

The trend away from skeuomorphic special effects in UI design is the beginning of the retina-resolution design era. Our designs no longer need to accommodate for crude pixels. Glossy/glassy surfaces, heavy-handed transparency, glaring drop shadows, embossed text, textured material surfaces ? these hallmarks of modern UI graphic design style are (almost) never used in good print graphic design. They?re unnecessary in print, and, the higher the quality of the output and more heavy-handed the effect, the sillier such techniques look.

Marc Edwards of Bjango also cites the print world, but mentions the technical limitations of rival platforms as a contributing factor to their simpler design languages:

In interface design, square finished corners are faster, because there?s no masking. Not including shadows is faster, because there?s less compositing. Drawing a flat colour is faster than drawing a gradient. When you have three or six pixel densities, drawing sharp textures is almost impossible, unless you include bitmap assets for every size you?re targeting.

Sebastiaan de With brought up a counterpoint on Twitter:

Very 'flat' UI is a meaningless reactionary design fad vs. overdesigned UI. Good designers aren't limited by style but taste and discretion.

I'm still of the opinion that it's less about skeuomorphism or it's opposite, digital authenticity, than it is about usability. In some cases, skeuomorphism helps make things discoverable, approachable, and engaging. In others, it just gets in the way.

Check out the examples above and let me know what you think. Would a unified skin across all of Apple's apps be more elegant or just more monotonous? Would a face lift make iOS less "boring" or just less interesting?

Update: Super-designer Louie Mantia brings up a couple of excellent points, and throws in a gorgeous mockup, on Twitter:

it's not about "flat" vs. "skeuomorphic," but more about "chrome" or "no chrome". I think that this might be a more interesting discussion to have than making all UI aluminum.

Artiphon's 'Instrument 1' is an iPhone powered multi-instrument, we go hands-on

Artiphon's Instrument One is an iPhone powered multi-instrument, we get hands-on

Music, MIDI and mobile? Seen that before, right? Well, yeah, but sometimes something comes along that surprises everyone. Artiphon's Instrument 1 is one such thing. And after all, there's more than one way to crack a nut. Artiphon's method involves creating a high-quality muli-instrument device that uses an iPhone or iPod touch as its brain. So, this is no plastic (bear with us) "appcessory." The Instrument 1 is made out of special quality African hardwood, and centers around an intentionally ambiguous design. There is a pair of high-quality custom speakers that give impressive 30W onboard sound. There is, of course, a line out and MIDI in / out too. The prototype we saw today doesn't have a built-in battery, but final production models will, making this a truly portable, complete solution. Dr Mike Butera, the firm's founder, was keen to explain to us that this is intended not to replicate one specific device (though it does a great job of guitar, violin, banjo and more), but rather to enable musicians to be able to work in a way they want to. The Instrument 1 works with any core MIDI enabled app, but there are plans to release a companion app for more detailed / custom mappings in the future. We got a private tour of the device, to tip-toe past the break for more.

The first thing we noticed was how authentic it felt. Authentic what? Well, ok, that's a little harder to explain. It definitely felt more like holding an instrument, than a MIDI device or an accessory component though. The oiled wood finish, metal speaker grilles and overall quality of the device make it feel like something you'd wield with care. The iPhone section is also pleasantly discreet. Sure, it takes somewhat center place, but at the same time keeps it out of the way when you're playing. Under the neck you'll also find some additional controls that steer the Instrument 1 in more dedicated instrument directions (bass mode for fret tapping, banjo mode with arpeggios etc). The small black box below the iPhone housing serves as a strum-surface (or when in violin mode, the area you "bow"), and the neck section is largely akin to a guitar neck, but when approached creatively, can be used in all manner of ways, such as drum-pads when resting on your lap. For those that want to know, it's currently sporting a 30-pin connector, but has room enough so that you can also use it with a lightning adaptor. There's also a physical volume control and a USB port.

As for the MIDI options... there are plenty. Polyphonic aftertouch, vibrato, versatile modulation and mapping, to name a few. There is an octave switch on the neck, also, so that you can get a wide range of musical notes with ease. Mike showed us that as there are two sensors on each neck-note, you can effectively cram two octaves into the same space too, should this better suit your needs. As mentioned above, currently this is the third prototype, but full production is expected soon. How much, then, does Artiphon want for the Instrument 1? That'll be $800 when it eventually rolls out towards the end of this year. A tall price for a MIDI controller perhaps, but you'll be replacing your entire band at the same time. Just don't tell them yet. Go south for the demo video.

Evolution inspires more efficient solar cell design: Geometric pattern maximizes time light is trapped in solar cell

Jan. 25, 2013 ? The sun's energy is virtually limitless, but harnessing its electricity with today's single-crystal silicon solar cells is extremely expensive -- 10 times pricier than coal, according to some estimates. Organic solar cells -- polymer solar cells that use organic materials to absorb light and convert it into electricity -- could be a solution, but current designs suffer because polymers have less-than-optimal electrical properties.

Researchers at Northwestern University have now developed a new design for organic solar cells that could lead to more efficient, less expensive solar power. Instead of attempting to increase efficiency by altering the thickness of the solar cell's polymer layer -- a tactic that has preciously garnered mixed results -- the researchers sought to design the geometric pattern of the scattering layer to maximize the amount of time light remained trapped within the cell.

Using a mathematical search algorithm based on natural evolution, the researchers pinpointed a specific geometrical pattern that is optimal for capturing and holding light in thin-cell organic solar cells.

The resulting design exhibited a three-fold increase over the Yablonovitch Limit, a thermodynamic limit developed in the 1980s that statistically describes how long a photon can be trapped in a semiconductor.

In the newly designed organic solar cell, light first enters a 100-nanometer-thick "scattering layer," a geometrically-patterned dielectric layer designed to maximize the amount of light transmitted into the cell. The light is then transmitted to the active layer, where it is converted into electricity.

"We wanted to determine the geometry for the scattering layer that would give us optimal performance," said Cheng Sun, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and co-author of the paper. "But with so many possibilities, it's difficult to know where to start, so we looked to laws of natural selection to guide us."

The researchers employed a genetic algorithm, a search process that mimics the process of natural evolution, explained Wei Chen, Wilson-Cook Professor in Engineering Design and professor of mechanical engineering at McCormick and co-investigator of the research.

"Due to the highly nonlinear and irregular behavior of the system, you must use an intelligent approach to find the optimal solution," Chen said. "Our approach is based on the biologically evolutionary process of survival of the fittest."

The researchers began with dozens of random design elements, then "mated" and analyzed their offspring to determine their particular light-trapping performance. This process was carried out over more than 20 generations and also accounted for evolutionary principles of crossover and genetic mutation.

The resulting pattern will be fabricated with partners at Argonne National Laboratory.

Also co-authoring the paper were co-lead authors Chen Wang and Shuangcheng Yu, graduate students in McCormick's Department of Mechanical Engineering.

(AP) ? The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch, was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

Pebble smartwatch review

Pebble smartwatch review

What is Kickstarter? The answer you'll hear, as long-winded as it may be, will likely touch on Pebble. If it doesn't, you'll probably want to ask someone else -- with more than $10 million pledged, the people's smartwatch catapulted past the crowdfunding site's records and the startup's own expectations. It achieved a $100,000 funding goal in two hours, and it was clearly a favorite among our readers. Of course, there were doubts that Eric Migicovsky, the company's founder, would deliver such an appealing and seemingly powerful product for $125, but following our first look during the company's CES press conference, that dream became real.

So, what is Pebble? It's not a smartphone for your wrist, as we've seen attempted before. In fact, it's far less sophisticated than you might expect -- the lightweight device reads out basic text, lets you skip through music tracks and, of course, displays the time. It's hardly the greatest achievement of our generation, or even the device of the year. It's become incredibly popular, sure, but despite the hype, you certainly don't need to own one. Yet, somehow, even the most technologically inept people in our lives have heard it mentioned on morning talk shows, FM radio stations or from pre-teens anxious to impress their friends. Having a smartphone alone isn't enough anymore. Or is it?

Hardware

We tested a black Pebble, which is the first color to ship. The face is slightly glossier than renders implied, but otherwise the production device looks nearly identical to early prototypes. There's a 22mm rubber strap for mounting the device to your wrist -- you'll likely be able to swap in your own band with matching dimensions. It's a fairly attractive combination, though regardless of the strap you choose, you'll probably want to leave Pebble behind during formal events, or walks down the runway.

Pebble feels very comfortable when fastened on the wrist -- it's relatively lightweight, and the smooth edges maintain their distance from sensitive skin. Still, it feels solid enough for regular use, and thanks to waterproofing down to 50 meters (164 feet), it can stay on your wrist during laps in the pool (or in the ocean), and it'll work just fine in the shower as well. There are two exposed metal connectors, used to pair up with the proprietary magnetic USB charging cable (the only accessory that ships in the box), but the housing appears to be properly sealed.

The secret to Pebble's weeklong battery life and daylight readability is a technology similar to what's penetrated the lives of bookworms young and old: an e-paper display. The 114 x 168 black-and-white screen sports nearly 20,000 pixels, letting you view emails and a time readout in several fonts, along with watch faces and other indicators. The display looks great both indoors and out, though we did notice some odd black spotting while viewing the panel in direct sunlight -- adjusting the angle eradicates the issue.

Pebble smartwatch review

There's a simple backlight that illuminates the panel briefly at night, automatically when you receive a notification or manually when you activate any of the four side-mounted buttons. It's fairly dim, enabling you to avoid disturbing fellow moviegoers or that patient significant other sharing your bed, but still bright enough for you to catch every detail. Pebble will reflect even a small amount of ambient light, however, so your backlight usage is likely to be fairly minimal.

Pebble doesn't offer much functionality without a smartphone. You'll need one (and an accompanying app) to get started, and although you'll be able to display the time while disconnected (in Airplane Mode, for example), software updates, feature additions and notifications all require a Bluetooth connection. Fortunately, there's Bluetooth 4.0 support, which offers speedy performance with reduced energy consumption. This also contributes to Pebble's weeklong battery life, and a reported five to 10 percent hit to your smartphone's longevity.

We'll detail the user interface more in the section below, but since there's no touch functionality here, you'll need to navigate using the four side-mounted buttons. There's a home (or back) button on the top left side, which brings you back to Pebble's main configuration page. Positioned to the right of the e-paper panel: a top button scrolls up, a smaller center button makes selections and the control on the bottom scrolls down -- through messages, menus or tracks while controlling music playback. All of these buttons require a firm press, rather than a tap, and while you won't accidentally activate the controls, registering input can take a bit of effort.

Software

Pebble's two apps -- one for Android 2.3 or later and the second for Apple devices running iOS 5 or later -- enable everything from initial setup to push notifications. There's no user manual in the box, so you'll need to download your respective app to get started. Pairing takes a few seconds, and then you're good to go. The smartwatch will automatically adopt the local time on your smartphone, and you can select from a few default watch faces, ranging from Text Watch, which you're probably already familiar with, to Classic Analog.

DNP Pebble smartwatch review

To take full advantage of the device's functionality, you'll need to head back over to the smartphone app, where you can push additional watch faces (there are currently just five to download, including TicTockToe). Eventually, this custom app store will include third-party apps, such as the bike computer and golf rangefinder that the company pitched on its Kickstarter page, though they're not available now.

The app's Settings page is where you'll select notifications to push. Based on the apps installed on our Galaxy Note II, we were able to choose from incoming call alerts, text messages, calendar reminders, email previews, Google Talk messages, Google Voice messages and Facebook messages. Each option has a checkbox, so if you want to use your Pebble for caller ID but don't want to be bothered with Facebook messages, that's perfectly OK. With each notification, the watch will vibrate once, the backlight will flip on (for a few seconds) and the message will pop up.

Theoretically, you can simply shake your wrist to dismiss the notification, though we were only able to accomplish this by pressing one of the buttons. You can choose from large and small fonts for notifications, but regardless of the size, you can scroll to see more using the up and down buttons. You'll need to hop over to your smartphone to read the full message or send a response. Similarly, when you receive a call, your only option on the watch is to dismiss the notification, but doing so won't send your caller to voicemail.

Unless you're looking at your watch every few seconds, there will likely come a time when your inbox contains multiple messages. Unfortunately, Pebble will only display the very last notification received, so it won't completely eliminate a need to check your smartphone. Also, it's not currently able to display certain languages -- a message we received with Chinese characters rendered as several lines of rectangles on the display.

DNP Pebble smartwatch review

At this point, all of the interactions between Pebble and a connected smartphone go in one direction -- from your handset to the watch -- with one exception. The wristwatch's music player controls playback on your Android or iOS device, including play / pause and track skipping. There's no volume control, which seems reasonable given the limited number of buttons. With our Android phone, the watch was able to identify and control music from the native app, but not third-party services, such as Spotify.

The competition

Although it may seem to be the case given the excitement surrounding this launch, Pebble is not the only smartwatch on the market. Sony and now Toshiba are two of the giants behind similar tech, and the former company's SmartWatch is even reasonably priced, at $149. Allerta, the company behind Pebble, released its own wearable several years ago, called inPulse, but smartphone compatibility was limited to BlackBerry models and certain Android-powered handsets, and the device uses an OLED display. Similarly, WIMM Labs' WIMM One was made available to developers, but is no longer in production.

Pebble's success stems from the promise of third-party apps and the practical e-paper display, along with the marketing power of Kickstarter. Functionality remains somewhat limited, but this is a first-generation device from a small manufacturer that's currently only in the hands of a very limited number of lucky backers. If consumer interest is any indication, developers will likely soon be hard at work on a variety of unique applications, if they aren't already. The platform is incredibly young, and the best is yet to come.

Wrap-up

DNP Pebble smartwatch review

We've really enjoyed our time with Pebble so far -- it's not a fashion statement, necessarily, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it pop up on many wrists in the weeks and months to come. Functionality is still quite limited at this point, and considering how fresh the device is, that's to be expected. The features that are already available work well, and the smartwatch has been a pleasure to use.

Taking price into account, Pebble is an excellent value, especially for lucky Kickstarter backers who were able to take advantage of $99, $115 and $125 pre-orders. We're very optimistic for the device's future -- our chief concern relates not to the hardware, but how it will affect behavior: If you thought that friend who glances at his smartphone every few minutes was rude, just wait until they own a Pebble.

Update: Pebble's fearless leader, Eric Migicovsky, responded with the answers to a few of our questions. He confirmed that the goal is to fulfill all Kickstarter orders within the next 6-8 weeks, with preorders following. The device may eventually end up in retail stores, but there's no firm timeline there. Pebble is powered by an ARM Cortex-M3 processor, with a 140mAh battery keeping you up and running for up to a week with occasional use, or five days with frequent notifications and backlight activation. On the cosmetic front, the dark spots we saw in sunlight was likely a "Mura Effect" from the lens -- it's possible that other users will notice this as well. Finally, English is the only language currently supported (which explains why our Chinese characters rendered as rectangles), but others will soon follow.

Update 2: Apps that support the Audio / Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) should be compatible with Pebble's audio controls. Spotify, however, does not include this support.

Matt Damon Kidnaps Jimmy Kimmel, Takes Over 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (VIDEO)

NEW YORK ? Matt Damon had his revenge.

The butt of a long-running joke on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," the actor opened Thursday night's show as a kidnapper who tied Kimmel to a chair with duct tape and gagged him with his own tie.

"There's a new host in town and his initials are M.D.," Damon said. "That's right, the doctor is in."

For years, Kimmel has joked at the end of his show that he ran out of time and was unable to bring Damon on as a guest. Kimmel was the silent one Thursday, watching from the back of the stage as Damon did his job.

Damon tormented Kimmel by bringing on a succession of big-name guests. Robin Williams stopped by to finish the monologue. Ben Affleck had a walk-on role. Sheryl Crow was the bandleader and performed her new single. Nicole Kidman, Gary Oldman, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon and Demi Moore all crowded the talk show's couch.

"I've been waiting for this moment for a long, long time," Damon said. "This is like when I lost my virginity, except this is going to last way longer than one second."

Damon's guest hosting turn came at a key time for Kimmel. ABC earlier this month moved the show to 11:35 p.m. ET and PT after a decade of airing it a half hour later, putting him in direct competition with Jay Leno and David Letterman.

Thursday's special program aimed for the same water-cooler status as a memorably lewd short film Damon made for the show a few years ago with Kimmel's then-girlfriend, Sarah Silverman. It went viral and remains probably the best-known skit in the show's history.

To twist the knife even further, Damon brought Silverman on as his final guest Thursday night, with Kimmel looking on forlornly as she likened their five-year relationship to an unfortunate trip to a hot dog vendor.

"Is there anything you'd like to say to Jimmy?" Damon asked.

"No, I'm good," Silverman replied.

Then came the sweetest revenge of all, with Damon promising to ungag Kimmel in the show's final minutes.

"Wait," he said. "I'm sorry. We're out of time."

SEM ? Search Engine Marketing ? World Internet Summit Speakers

A FASTER APPROACH TO GAINING BUSINESS !!!

Enhancing the presence of your website on the Internet may not be easy but it is not difficult either. There are many factors that you will have to consider. If you have a website then making it known to the visitors or the Internet users is essential without which you are not going to gain anything. marketing techniques are all interrelated but you need to know what each has got and how one is different from the other.

SEM or Search Engine marketing can have great many advantages.

Promoting a business or business activities depend(s) largely on your approach. You will have to have a goal in your mind first. It is entirely different from other forms of marketing. SEM gives off many branches of online marketing. It is, to a certain extent, not that easy to carry out. Other things that are interconnected and that even have direct relevance to Search Engine marketing are Website Design, linking or link building, Web Content or Website Content, SEO or search engine optimization Or SEO Article Submission and Online Advertising.

SEM may seem not that easy but once a technical approach is adopted then it becomes easier. Most of the businesses today are concentrating on this type of marketing because it is result-oriented.

If the work is carried out at a faster pace then it is possible that in a short period of time the desired results can be seen. marketing Strategies are inter dependent and follow a system which co-ordinates everything (that is a part of it). Search Engine marketing Strategies include website marketing which is demographical and it is entirely depended on the market research.

The focus is laid much on ?targeted keywords? and building the number of links to one?s website. Online advertising may seem to be a little bit costly for others but if you consider the importance of it or the business that you can gain by making use of it then spending the money on it will be an issue. The more you spend on, the sooner you can see the results. There can be an enormous increase in number of visitors to your site if you go for advertising online. Online Advertisement have great many advantages. You will be visible to one and all. By placing some catchy information you can win the customers.

It is true that the involvement of money on this is a bit much more than the amount of money one spends on SEO or search engine optimization. If you sit back and study these two aspects of promotion then you will come to know that both of them have the same purpose but latter is a bit slower process as it may take a lot of time to increase the visibility of your website but former one follows a much faster approach. Within a short span of time the results are much more known. You can come to know what your website status is.

Another way that is much more fruitful is Email Campaigning. It can have its own advantages. You can have lot many advantages. If you send bulk emails to your contacts or business individuals then you are going to get some good results.

SEM is really a big task. It is really not that easy but it has lot more effectiveness. Online marketing is much more dependent on this manner of promotion as well. Most of the marketers or online marketing personnel divide the SEM tasks into smaller groups and assigned each smaller group to officials who have expertise in the respective area. In this manner it becomes easier to focus much more and work properly and achieve the result. To take up any manner of promotion you will also have to study the pros and cons of it. You will have to consider your company budget as well.

Online Campaigning or Email campaigning is what most of the business organizations rely on. They know that they can have the results in a shorter period of time. Most of the times it happens that when you send bulk emails to thousands or thousands of contacts then you would probably gain responses from them. It is not always a bad luck. The promotion is much depended what you are going to offer.
