Miss Elkford Ambassador Pageant | Mary Giuliano

Posted by admin in : News , trackback

Six months of training concluded this past weekend for six of Elkford?s loveliest young residents.

Morgan McLean, Chiara MacPherson, Meaghan Frenks, Maddi McHarg, Cassandra Nixon, and Anastasia Wildeman were put through the paces in front of judges Michelle Epp, Program coordinator for the Trail Ambassador program, Yvonne Molle from Odyssey Clothing Store and myself of Fernie. We had the difficult job of ranking the girls on beginning with written essays, opening musical number, sponsor speech and little buddy introductions, talent and frugal fashion show on Friday evening.

Saturday began with an intense 25 minute interview of candidates by the judges, dinner with the judges with judging on how the girls comported themselves in a social setting and then more speeches, evening gown, impromptu question ,closing number and coronation.

The hall was full to capacity both nights with family and friends of the contestants who performed very well in all categories that included dress, projection of voice, sincerity of manner, personality and poise.

These grade ten girls are barely sixteen with Chiara still shy of the number yet they showed poise and grace that was remarkable.

Organizer Debbie Kliment and Lynn Lundegren and Judge Chairperson Kim Bauer emphasised that this is not a beauty pageant. The girls are given a six month time frame to learn numerous self- improvement techniques to carry them through life. All said the program helped them immensely especially with public speaking. Morgan commented that before being involved with this program she was unable to stand up and speak at all while Cassandra said she couldn?t speak without giggling profusely, both girls spoke well in front of the crowds at the pageant.

Mayor Dean McKerracher brought greetings saying Council supported this program, then drew a laugh when he said that now that he no longer had grand- daughters taking part in the pageant he could push for more funding for the program. This is the third year for this program and both previous years saw Kenzie and Shelan Bauer compete with Kenzie winning the crown the first year and Shelan winning Princess last year.

Candidates enjoy a buddy program with little girls spending time with them during the past months in role model capacity.

The little buddies were part of the show both days and it was very touching to see them hand their candidate a bouquet of fresh flowers and give them a hug.

This program builds self- esteem for girls competing and the little buddies who could become the candidates of the future say the organizers.

As a judge I found it difficult to choose, we had to pay rapt attention to every little detail as the girls were all gracious and talented.

After each category judges scored points for each one privately and then handed the sheet to auditor Mandy Mcgregor. Points were also recorded by the two organizers for the time they spent in preparation events and training. All scores were then tallied and announced to candidates, judges, family and friends by master of ceremonies Lorrie-Ann MacLeod who did an excellent job with her ability to adlib and add humor to both evenings.

Before the coronation Princess Shelan Bauer and Miss Elkford teen ambassador Sydney Thompson walked down the aisle one last time, gave speeches and presented several awards before announcing the winners.

Chiara won for best frugal fashion, she purchased a bed sheet for one dollar and made a colourful beautiful outfit that included booties and stole the show as she danced down the walkway modelling.

Anastasia won a 600 dollar scholarship for selling the most candidates ballots. Morgan won for being best improved in public speaking. Cassandra won Miss Congeniality.

Visiting royalty from Cranbrook, Peachland and Trail were also on hand to salute the retiring princess and ambassador and also to bring greetings from their respective cities.

At the end the coveted princess honour went to Anastasia Wildeman with Cassandra Nixon crowned Miss Elkford Teen Ambassador.

I can?t say enough on how well all the candidates performed in every aspect of the competition. They are all winners in every way.

Sincere Congratulations to all the candidates and to Cassandra and Anastasia may your year of reign be filled with much joy and laughter and learning.

As the U.S. and Others Toss Syria's Envoys, Is Moscow Changing Its Mind About Assad?

International envoy to Syria Kofi Annan met Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus on Tuesday, in a bid to salvage Anna's battered plan for peace. "He conveyed in frank terms his view to President Assad that the six-point plan cannot succeed without bold steps to stop the violence and release detainees, and stressed the importance of full implementation of the plan," Annan's office said in a statement. For his part, Assad "affirmed to Annan that the success of his plan depends on stopping weapon smuggling and curbing terrorism and those who support it," the state's SANA news agency said.

It is not the first time Annan has been in Damascus to push his six-point plan. And it's not the first time Assad has said that he's implementing it.

(PHOTOS: The Syrian Civil War: Photographs by Alessio Romenzi)

But the key to breaking the stalemate, some observers say, isn't in Damascus, it's in Moscow. Russia has steadfastly provided political cover for its key Middle Eastern ally, shielding Damascus from diplomatic censure by twice wielding its veto in the United Nations Security Council. On Tuesday a host of Western nations including the U.S., Britain, France, Australia and Italy tossed Syrian diplomats out of their capitals, but Moscow has routinely ignored the growing international outcry. It has continued to ship arms to a regime intent on pursuing what Assad has termed a "security solution" to the 15-month crisis, even while it insists that inter-Syrian dialogue, not violence, is the only hope for the troubled country.

Some observers say that the Houla massacre over the weekend, which left more than a hundred Syrians dead, including at least 32 children, may have prompted a shift in Russia's stance. Indeed, Moscow signed onto a UN press statement that condemned the Syrian government's role in the slaughter. Moscow was expected to block it.

The statement condemned the "outrageous use of force against civilian population" saying that it constituted a violation of international law and of the Syrian government's commitments to cease violence. "The members of the Security Council demanded that the government of Syria immediately cease the use of heavy weapons in population centers and immediately pull back its troops and its heavy weapons from in and around population centers and return them to their barracks."

(MORE: Russia Condemns Syria Over Massacre)

Still, on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was a little more ambiguous. While "the [Syrian] government bears the main responsibility for what is going on," he said that both sides were responsible for the Houla massacre. Moscow does not "support the Syrian government," but rather the "Annan plan that addresses both the Syrian government and the armed opposition," Lavrov said, adding that to avoid another Houla, "foreign parties" should stop "making efforts at regime change." So, Russia doesn't support the Syrian government, yet it doesn't want regime change but rather the implementation of a plan that effectively demands that Assad dismantle his own regime. Is that a shift in its policy?

No, says Professor Joshua Landis, a Syria expert at the University of Oklahoma who edits the prominent blog "Syria Comment." "Russia has a long history of saying that they're not stuck on Assad, they're critical of the regime, they don't like the killing, that this has to be done in a peaceful way, a peaceful transition of power," Landis says. "But under it all what they're saying is they want to see a credible opposition that can take power peacefully before they're willing to change their policy."

Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center, also doesn't think Russia has budged, and says that the UN press statement was "the lowest common denominator for what may be one of the most gruesome massacres."

"I think the Russians are quite confused," Shaikh says. "Certainly they've been trying to think out loud how to move this forward and how to support Annan, but at the same time, their actions aren't leading up to that." He agrees that Moscow isn't willing to sign up to a post-Assad Syria just yet, because it's "extremely hesitant about what comes next, and not really willing to engage in that, and yet the longer this goes on, we're going to have a much messier transition in any case which is not in anyone's interest."

(MORE: As 'Horrified' Annan Arrives in Damascus, Will Syria's Houla Massacre Force Action on the Crisis?)

There have been a flurry of reports suggesting that a Yemen-style transition may be in the offing -- and that is where Russia's help will be critical, that is, in convincing Assad to leave office. The supposed deal is modeled on the one that eventually coaxed Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh to relinquish power and leave the country. It effectively means decapitating the regime but leaving most of the rest of it intact. Presumably Russia's interest is that the regime remnants will ensure that its commercial deals and naval base in Tartus along the eastern Mediterranean will remain.

It's all very unlikely for many reasons, analysts say, not least because Assad has to agree to leave. Landis says "it's pie in the sky." "Bashar is young (he's 46, Saleh is 69) and the Alawites are determined they're going to win." Also, the regime, "cannot be reformed," Landis says. "If Bashar steps aside, and the Assad family leaves Syria, the entire thing will fall apart. It is a cult of personality and cult of leadership."

Shaikh says that there's little appetite for a transition that may take months or even years, given the "level of brutality of the regime." Quite apart from that, Shaikh says that Assad has simply spilt too much blood for anyone in the Syrian opposition to be able to stomach -- or sell the idea to other Syrians -- that the president be permitted to leave the country and enjoy a quiet exile. "The time has passed for a Yemen-style solution," Shaikh says, "who is going to trust this regime, even if you decapitate it? There needs to be a level of regime involvement in some continuity but it has to be on terms which are dramatically different from perhaps what is being proposed right now."

Michael Young, opinion editor of Beirut's The Daily Star newspaper, doesn't think Russia is interested in undermining Assad by pursuing a Yemen-style solution. "They keep saying they're not necessarily wedded to the idea of keeping Bashar in power, but in reality... they have to keep him in power because if he begins weakening, then their leverage obviously weakens, and once that happens, their ability to negotiate a transition in Syria weakens, and yet the paradox is that precisely because they have that leverage they don't want to lose it by negotiating a transition in Syria. In a way they're a prisoner of this situation."

The International Crisis Group's Peter Harling, sees Russia less as a prisoner and more like a prima donna, enjoying the political dividends of its starring role in the Syria story. "They hit the bonanza," he says. "Their position on Syrian has provided them with important political dividends. People think it's like the Cold War all over again -- powerful Russia standing up to the U.S., projecting itself internationally, and with military assets in the Mediterranean. It's all very superficial, it's a big bluff, but like any bluff they want it to last as long as possible."

(PHOTOS: The Victims of Assad: Photographs by Peter Hapak)

That role is sustained by the Annan mission, Harling says, and if the mission were to collapse entirely, so would Russia's interpretation of its starring role. "I don't think Russia would stand by this regime indefinitely, and be an ally in the context of a civil war for instance," he says. "I think they have an interest in seeing this mission survive, although they don't want it to be hijacked by what they would describe as a reckless Western regime change agenda either."

Shaikh thinks Russia's higher profile, particularly in the Middle East, is not something to crow about, because it's being viewed "in negative terms." It should be mindful of its wider interests in the region, he says, particularly its ties to Gulf powerhouses Saudi Arabia and Qatar, who vehemently oppose Assad.

Harling disagrees. "They've lost so much in this part of the world that they're free, there's nothing to lose," he says. For his part, Landis says Russia's Syria policy dovetails with its regional interests. "Russia's wider interests, to me, are pushing back at the Americans, preserving Iran and Syria outside of U.S control and showing their friends that they can stand by them," he says.

Ultimately, Russia's political cover may help the Syrian regime stay in power for a little longer, but that may be all given that it has alienated wide swathes of its population. "I'm not sure this regime can survive," Harling says, "with or without Russian support."

USC Dornsife Scientific Diving: Diving into Apra Harbor s Western Shoals and CB Junkyard

By Santiago Fernandez-Barrera

Drenched by the torrential rains of Guam as a tropical depression petered out to the northwest, my classmates and I loaded up the dive boat with gear as we prepared for our first set of dives since leaving Catalina Island. Suddenly, the clouds cleared and we set off through the mangrove forests into Apra Harbor.

Our destinations for the day were Western Shoals Reef and SeaBee Junkyard, where we would be making our first coral reef dive and practicing our data collection methods for use on Palau. Out in the distance, on the south side of the harbor, I could see the naval base that is one of the principal uses of Apra Harbor. Although it already covers a large area, I had to remind myself that the military footprint on Apra Harbor might increase still more if the proposed carrier berthing goes through.

Pulling myself back into the task at hand I prepared for our dive at Western Shoals. After a dive briefing by USC Dornsife Dive Safety Officer Gerry Smith, we put on an unusually light amount of gear, looked out at the horizon and stepped off the swim step, unprepared for the sight that awaited us.

Unusually free without the clumsiness of a 7-mm wetsuit, I descending onto the reef below. Thousands of coral heads fanned out forming tiny skyscrapers for multicolored fish to swim between.

I followed my dive buddy and professor, Dave Ginsburg, deeper along the reef to take a closer look at the marine environment below. Covering a majority of the reef, Porites coral takes on several forms, creating a multilayered landscape speckled with brightly colored fish, sponges and soft corals.

After a few meters Dave turned to me and pointed at his ears and then at a peculiar blue mantle emerging from the coral. I immediately recognized that he was pointing at a massive elephant ear sponge, a species found in Guam only in Apra Harbor. As I considered the sponge I realized that dredging a nearby reef for the proposed carrier berthing would very likely cover this area with sediment and threaten not only sponges but other reef species as well.

Swimming forward, Dave began to wave his fingers out in front of him at a school of butterfly fish. Puzzled I followed suit and was amazed to see them school around us, curiously inspecting our fingers. My classmates soon caught on and before we knew it we were surrounded by dozens of other curious little fish.

Still mesmerized by the sight below I slowly ascended, readying myself for the next dive. Above water we were reminded that this area hosts an active military site by a passing nuclear submarine being escorted back to the naval base. We headed to SeaBee Junkyard to do our first transact tape survey in Micronesia.

Located next the Glass Breakwater, SeaBee Junkyard is characterized by an assortment of discarded WW II relics that are sometimes overgrown with marine life. Due to its shallow depth and sandy bottom, this was the chosen location to practice our data collection techniques. Tying off our transect tape to a bulldozer dropped here 67 years ago, my group and I headed out at 330 degrees to begin our survey of the area.

Surveying both fish and invertebrates we were able to identify the indicator species that we had so diligently memorized prior to our arrival in Guam. Having finished our survey and rolling up our transact tape we were free to swim around and inspect the junk dropped by the military so long ago.

I was able to collect a little souvenir, a 1945 Coca Cola bottle. Exhausted after a long day of diving we readied ourselves for the next part of our journey through Micronesia. Apra Harbor was just a taste of what?s to come and a firm reminder of the importance of our work in the field.

About the Author: Santiago Fernandez-Barrera is a junior pursuing a BS in Environmental Studies in the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. He hopes to return to his home country of Mexico and promote environmentally sustainable business practices.

Editor?s note: Scientific Research Diving at USC Dornsife is offered as part of an experiential summer program offered to undergraduate students of the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. This course takes place on location at the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island and throughout Micronesia. Students investigate important environmental issues such as ecologically sustainable development, fisheries management, protected-area planning and assessment, and human health issues. During the course of the program, the student team will dive and collect data to support conservation and management strategies to protect the fragile coral reefs of Guam and Palau in Micronesia.

Instructors for the course include Jim Haw, Director of the Environmental Studies Program in USC Dornsife, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies David Ginsburg,, SCUBA instructor and volunteer in the USC Scientific Diving Program Tom Carr and USC Dive Safety Officer Gerry Smith of the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies

Facebook stock pounded, hovers around $30

(AP) ? Facebook's stock is dropping again, hovering around $30 after it hit a new low in morning trading.

Shares of Facebook Inc. are down $1.72, or 5.4 percent, to $30.19 as of late morning on Tuesday. Earlier, the stock hit $30.03, its lowest since Facebook began publicly trading more than a week ago.

The social networking company's stock priced at $38 in its initial public offering on May 18. Rather than a seeing a big first-day-pop, it closed just 23 cents higher on the following day. Now, it's about 20 percent below the IPO price.

The stock's public debut was marred by technical glitches at the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading. The company and the investment banks that led the IPO face shareholder lawsuits, which Facebook say are without merit.

HUFFPOST FUNDRACE -- Secret Koch Contributions

After reports from the Center for Responsive Politics and Republic Report looked into the $55 million in secret money given by the Center to Protect Patients' Rights to conservative non-profis in the 2010 election the LA Times picked up the story over the weekend: "The financial firepower that fueled the rise of a network of conservative advocacy groups now pummelingDemocrats with television ads can be traced, in part, to Box 72465 in the Boulder Hills post office, on a desert road on the northern outskirts of Phoenix. That's the address for the Center to Protect Patient Rights, an organization with ties to Charles and David H. Koch, the billionaire brothers who bankroll a number of conservative organizations. During the 2010 midterm election, the center sent more than $55 million to 26 GOP-allied groups, tax filings show, funding opaque outfits such as American Future Fund, 60 Plus and Americans for Job Security that were behind a coordinated campaign against Democratic congressional candidates. ...The Kochs have several ties to the center. It is run by Sean Noble, a Phoenix-based GOP consultant who is a key operative in the Kochs' political activities, as first noted by the investigative blog Republic Report. One of the center's original directors, Heather Higgins, is chairwoman of the Independent Women's Forum, which has received funding from a Koch-controlled foundation. And Cheryl Hillen, a Connecticut-based consultant who raised $2.6 million for the center, was director of fundraising for the Koch-backed Citizens for a Sound Economy."

The New York Times editorializes about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's reaction to a court ruling that would require them to disclose donors if they followed the same pattern of spending as in previous year, "The only good news is that the chamber?s highly partisan loyalties will now be fully exposed. It has always claimed that it is not a Republican or Democratic group, but simply one that supports the interests of American business. But the $33 million it spent in the 2010 elections on issue ads was almost entirely in support of Republicans and against Democrats, as will be the estimated $50 million it may spend this year. When the chamber is overtly advocating the election of Republicans ? rather than hiding behind phony issue ads ? it will be impossible to deny that it has become a very well-financed arm of the party. And companies that contribute to the chamber will be unable to claim that they are paying dues to an independent business league."

The Supreme Court will consider Citizens United II on June 14, according to SCOTUSBlog.

U.S. criticizes Israel's treatment of African migrants in human rights report

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton presented on Thursday the State Department's 2011 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices that criticizes Israel for its treatment of African migrants, an issue vigorously debated in Israeli public discourse lately.

The report states that Sudanese and Eritrean asylum seekers, which are about 85 percent of African migrants in Israel "were not allowed access to asylum procedures but were given renewable 'conditional release' documents that deferred deportation and had to be renewed every few months."

The report quotes statistics provided by the UNHCR, showing that during the year out of 4,603 new asylum applications 3,692 were rejected. Only one was approved. 6,412 cases remained pending at year?s end.

The report also critically mentioned that the Israeli government officials "often negatively referred to asylum seekers as 'infiltrators' and periodically characterized asylum seekers as directly associated with rises in crime, disease, and terrorism."
The report specifically mentions December 2011 interview of the Minister of Interior Eli Yishai with the IDF radio, in which he promised to "ensure that the last of the Sudanese, and the Eritreans, and all of the infiltrators, to the last of them, will return to their countries.?

The report also referred to criticism by NGO's of "the lack of medical treatment upon arrival for asylum seekers who had been abused, raped, and tortured in Egypt" and the petition filed by one of NGO's in the Be?er Sheva District Court "regarding the segregation of children of asylum seekers in the city of Eilat, who were not accepted into the school system but forced to study in a makeshift school outside of Eilat?s municipal boundary."

Meanwhile, the Anti-Defamation League expressed "serious concern" on Thursday following the violent protest against African migrants in southern Tel-Aviv. Abraham Foxman, ADL National Director, said in a statement that "while we recognize the complexity involved in properly addressing this issue, and sympathize with Israeli citizens whose personal security has been compromised by the lawlessness and violence of some migrants, we are disturbed by inflammatory public statements made by certain Israeli officials, some of which has veered into racism. These statements are counterproductive and only serve to further inflame tensions."

Foxman called on all parties "to work to calm the tensions" and commended Prime Minister Netanyahu for his condemnation of the inflammatory comments by the members of Knesset that took part in the demonstration, and "his commitment to resolving this crisis responsibly."

The Jewish Council for Public Affairs President Rabbi Steve Gutow said Israeli authorities "must see that this vulnerable population, some of whom were forced from their homes by politically and racially motivated persecution, is fully protected." Recognizing the challenge the constant flow of migrants poses to Israel, Gutow said that it's "never an excuse for violence and bigotry. We hope and expect that the authorities will take effective measures to protect this population from further violence and that legitimate requests by refugees to remain in Israel based on fear of persecution in their home countries will be considered humanely and with due process taking into account internationally accepted norms."

JCPA Chair Larry Gold added: "We join with Prime Minister Netanyahu and others in condemning the violence and xenophobic statements from some political quarters."
